What Do You See in This Ink Blot?

This test was originally used solely for people suffering from serious psychological problems such as schizophrenia, severe paranoia, etc… If you have already been asked to take this test or if someone asks you to take it, for example as part of a job interview, don’t assume that the interviewers think that you’re crazy! Like IQ tests which were originally used to detect intelligence deficiencies in children but now enjoy widespread use, the Rorschach test is now widely used for other reasons.

Developed in 1921 by the Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach, the test is based on psychoanalytic principles. Based on interpretations of a series of black-and-white or color symmetrical ink blots (made by splashing ink on a piece of paper, then folding the paper in half), the test reveals certain aspects of the individual’s personality. The test consists of a dozen pieces of cardboard displaying the famous ink blots.

The question asked is always the same,
"Tell me what you see in this drawing…"Giving full rein to his or her imagination, the observer interprets the design, and the person giving the test can come up with a precise evaluation of the observer’s personality. Since the analysis is based on the association of ideas coming from imagined observations, it is impossible to lie when taking the test.

There are, however, certain types of answers that should be avoided – in particular, those that would give the impression that you are tormented or haunted by something. Here are two examples of this test that will help you to understand the nature of positive answers as compared to the negative answers that you might be tempted to give.

Possible answers :

Two women facing each other as they crush grain… Two dancers

Answers to avoid :

The head of a dead person, of a cadaver, of a demon…

Possible answers :

Two dancing bears… Two animals playing together… Two men greeting each other…

Answers to avoid :

An open-mouthed man or woman…
